Become a Green Role Model 2020 and lead by example

When you lead by example, you create a picture of what’s possible. People can look at you and say, “Well, if he or she can do it, I can do it.” When you lead by example, you make it easy for others to follow you.

Once you start using eco-friendly, green cleaning products and tools and see how well they work, others will most likely follow suit. Don’t be shy about green cleaning at home or the office. As the more of us that make the change the healthier we and our environment will be!

Guiding and encouraging people to take the first step towards their own journey on the path of change towards a chemical-free future is my quest. I am deeply passionate about the wellbeing of mankind and our planet and am here to offer you the motivation, inspiration and insight you require to embrace these changes and commence reducing and eliminating your exposure to harmful toxins for the future health of your family and our fragile planet.

When you choose joy you feel good & when you feel good, you do good & when you do good it reminds others of what joy feels like & it might just inspire them to do the same.

Here at Natures Army we love having the opportunity to raise awareness about important issues that can make a world of difference to you and your families health and overall well being. We are extremely passionate about creating a healthy life style that suits your family and are sure without a doubt that you are just the same.

We live in an era of intense time pressure, when most people feel there simply isn’t enough time in their lives and stress is at an all-time high. That can make us feel out of control and always behind, and unhappy, especially at the holidays. So give some thought to how you really want to spend your time in 2020. And maybe find time to do a little something nice for your neighbour, not because it’s just one more thing to cross off your to-do list, or because the research shows doing something nice for someone else really does make us happy, but because this is what a truly joyful holiday season is all about.

Merry Christmas from Natures Army

Bring back that excitement you experienced as a child and have a truly magical Christmas, whatever your age. When we’re young, Christmas is all about traditions, such as writing letters to Santa Claus, baking Christmas treats and making decorations for the tree. However, as we get older, and perhaps spend Christmas away from our families, traditions can start to fade. To recapture the magic of Christmas, try to hold on to some of the childhood traditions you used to love. Although you may feel too old for these rituals now, by reliving your childhood traditions the Christmas magic will soon come flooding back. You could also visit a Christmas market in a location you have never visited before, try a festive activity such as ice skating or carol singing, or simply bake something new. Trying something new and exciting this Christmas will guarantee it is one to remember.

Merry Christmas from the team at Natures Army

Cleaning Supply Accidents: Stats about Chemical Burns and Poisonings

Many household cleaners can cause severe damage when ingested or splashed directly onto the skin and eyes. We are mostly aware of the acute toxicity of some cleaning supplies, statistics on hospital visits and poison control calls make clear that accidents with cleaning supplies occur daily.

Chemical burns from caustic cleaners by the Environmental Working Group:

  • Cleaning products that are extremely acidic or alkaline or contain corrosive ingredients can cause painful burns to the skin and eyes and permanent tissue damage or scarring. Inhaling fumes from these products can harm the lungs. Cleaning professionals can suffer serious chemical injuries on the job.
  • A 1999 study found that every year, for example, 6 of every 100 building custodians in Santa Clara County, Calif., experienced chemical-related injuries; 20 percent were serious burns to the eyes or skin (Barron 1999).
  • A review of records of 94 patients admitted to a hospital burn unit for chemical burns over a 19-year period found that 14 percent were injured at home with ordinary household cleaning products (Wibbenmeyer 1999).
  • One of the most serious immediate hazards is the formation of high levels of harmful gases when strongly reactive cleaning products are mixed. Bleach-based products pose the greatest hazard. Chloramine gas forms when bleach- and ammonia-based cleaners are mixed. Chlorine gas forms when bleach-based cleaners are mixed with acidic cleaners such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers or vinegar.

Chemical fragrances are a major allergy problem

Some respiratory allergies may be set off by fragrances, which are complex chemical mixtures commonly used to scent air fresheners and cleaners, personal care products and other consumer goods. Fragrances are collectively considered among the top five allergens in the world. Here are some facts by the Environmental Working Group:

Researchers at the Universities of Washington and West Georgia who surveyed everyday Americans’ experiences with fragranced cleaning supplies found that nearly one in five suffered headaches, breathing difficulties or other problems when exposed to air fresheners (Caress 2009).

  • A study led by Alexandra Farrow of Brunel University in the United Kingdom linked air fresheners in the home to higher incidence of diarrhea and earaches in infants and headaches and depression in their mothers (Farrow 2003).
  • A Swiss study published this year found that use of air freshening sprays 4-7 days a week was associated with reduced heart rate variability, a marker of autonomic cardiac dysfunction (Mehta 2012).
  • Because manufacturers routinely refuse to list individual ingredients in fragrances, independent researchers have difficulty conducting targeted studies to identify which fragrance chemicals raise the greatest concern.
  • Enzymes added to laundry and dishwashing detergents to break down and remove soils and stains have been linked to respiratory allergies in occupational settings. Manufacturers have taken steps to reduce exposure by encapsulating these enzymes, but workplace studies suggest that problems remain.

Consider making  your own natural air freshener spray with simple, non-toxic ingredients, which is a safer alternative to the harmful chemicals found in regular air fresheners. Or try our purifying room spray, which is handmade in small batches with love in Australia from safe, natural ingredients you can trust, by our own team of eco-cleaning professionals to protect your home, your family and our fragile planet.

This rejuvenating blend of essential oils will not only purify but refresh and deodorise any room in your home or office. After you have bought the initial glass bottle we offer a refill price and will refill your bottles on the days that we are in your area, this keeps the cost down and also the dreaded waste.

What you should know about formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a highly toxic substance. It is a known cancer-causing agent. It damages the neurological connectors in the body. It is an irritant to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs and may cause: skin reactions, ear infections, headaches, depression, asthma, joint pain, dizziness, mental confusion, nausea, disorientation, phlebitis, fatigue, vomiting, sleep disturbances and laryngitis.

One in five people are sensitive to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is commonly found in: drugs, mouthwash, hairspray, cosmetics, cleaning products, perfumes , waxes, hair setting lotions, shampoo, air fresheners, fungicides, fingernail polish, floor polishes, dry cleaning solvents, toothpaste, laundry spray starch, anti-perspirants, just to name a few.

Do you still want to use products in your home that contain formaldehyde?

Look out for the following names on labels: Formalin, Methanal, Methyl Aldehyde, Methylene Oxide, Oxymethylene, Bfv, Fannofor, Formol, Fyde, Karsan, Methaldehyde, Formalith, Methylene Glycol, Ivalon, Oxomethane, Formalin 40, Formalin, Formic Aldehyde, Hoch, Paraform, Lysoform, Morbocid, Trioxane, Polyoxmethylene.

Most warning labels on containers refer only to toxic hazards from ingestion; however, only 10% of health problems from chemicals are caused by ingestion. 90% are caused by the inhalation of vapors and absorption of particles.

Can you imagine your life without a smartphone for a whole week?

Our twenty first century world is constantly evolving rapidly. New advances in science and technology to make our lives easier and more efficient are staggering. You only have to look around you, to see someone plugged into some type of device, be it a lap top, iPad, computer, or smart phone. In fact most of us would be lost without them, even worse many of us are totally and utterly reliant on these gadgets to the point of addiction. Startling figures for 2017, document the number of smartphone users in Australia is estimated to reach 16.69 million, with the number of smartphone users worldwide forecast to exceed 2 billion users by that time.

Not only is it our addictive devices that have been scientifically created to satisfy our craving for an easy existence, the sad truth is that we are now totally consumed and reliant on the wonders of science and technology to make our lives as effortless as possible. We automatically assume that all products manufactured and sold to us are safe and will not harm mankind or our environment and we are happy to use them until a scientist or someone in the media points out otherwise. Practically all of the products we purchase have in some shape or form been chemically constructed.

Now saying that not all chemicals are bad but there is a very dark side to our dependancy on toxic chemicals. Since the 1960s in particular, the increase in toxic products we use every day is astonishing. Statistics reveal the average home contains up to 1,000 chemicals, a number of which are considered unsafe or have not been thoroughly tested. While some chemicals can be tolerated in small quantities, they may become problematic if combined with other toxins, or encountered in large amounts.

Because we have different bodies, genetics and tolerance levels, it is difficult to determine at what levels the chemicals begin to affect general wellbeing. Nevertheless, it is a fact that abundant toxins can and do lead to health problems. This alone should be a strong enough reason to question what is hiding behind the confusing labels, clever marketing and fancy packaging of these perilous products. But there is a dark side to our chemical dependency; we have produced such an extraordinary variety and quantity of chemicals so rapidly and with so few controls that they have now spread unseen into every corner of our increasingly contaminated environment. And we have learned too late that many of these chemicals are in our bodies and may be making people sick.

Recent scientific research has show that common chemicals can disrupt our endocrine or immune systems. Others can harm our brains, damage our reproductive abilities, or may even trigger cancer. Some even believe that chemical toxins are at least partly responsible for the obesity epidemic.

Once our awareness has been heightened to the harm these commodities are inflicting to your health and well being and the future of our planet, I guarantee you will not look back.

Join our recruits today and commence spreading the word. “Lets start cleaning up our acts naturally” and “Paying attention to prevention”, because our future, the future of our children, their children and our planet rely on it!

Getting to the Bottom of Borax: Is it safe for Cleaning or not?

Borax, also known as sodium borate, sodium tetraborate, or disodium tetraborate, is an important boron compound, a mineral, and a salt of boric acid. Powdered borax is white, consisting of soft colorless crystals that dissolve in water. Borax is extremely alkaline, which makes it irritating when used undiluted.

Borax Substitute (Sodium Sesquicarbonate)
Is ideal for formulating into laundry powders for low temperature use and cold water fill machines. Its pH allows gentle grease removal especially when aided with surfactants (soap to you and me). Sodium Sesquicarbonate is included on the INCI list of cosmetic ingredients and is the industry standard builder for traditional bath salt formulations, treating hard water for a relaxing bath. The product can also be incorporated safely into bath bombs and bath cubes. It is phosphate free and bio-degradable.

Borax (Sodium borate, Sodium tetraborate, or Disodium tetraborate)
Borax, whilst being a natural product, is non-biodegradable and can be used effectively as a herbicide and insecticide! Care should be taken whilst using it, as the powder can be toxic if ingested, gets into the eyes or through prolonged exposure on the skin. None of the above risks mean that you shouldn’t use borax, just don’t use it around food, keep it out of reach of children and pets, and make sure you rinse borax out of clothes and off surfaces before use.

However, I do feel you need to know (and no on-line places that sell this product seem to mention it), is that Borax was added to the Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) candidate list on 16 December 2010. Substances and mixtures imported into the EU which contain Borax are now required to be labelled with the warnings “May damage fertility” and “May damage the unborn child”.

Although Borax is an environmentally friendly product, it’s actually mildly toxic to children and pets if consumed, and can kill plants in high doses, cause skin, eye and respiratory irritation, so if used, should be used with caution. As a result Borax is no longer available in the UK, but have no fear, a better, safer alternative can be found, called Borax substitute. Borax substitute still has all the same cleaning and laundry uses, but you get a safer alternative for your money. Uses of Borax Substitute Borax Substitute has a number of qualities that make it ideal for a variety of tasks around the house.

Although Borax substitute is much safer then Borax, it should still be used with caution; we recommend you always wear rubber gloves just to be safe. I mainly use it as a natural laundry booster. It converts tiny amounts of water into Hydrogen Peroxide, giving it a mild bleaching effect; perfect for stained white clothes. Borax Substitute also softens water, increasing the efficiency of the laundry detergent, and therefore meaning less detergent is needed per wash saving you money. Borax is also a natural deodoriser and degreaser, making it great at removing the oils and smells from particularly dirty clothes. Borax Substitute also works great as an eco friendly degreaser. Mix with water and lemon juice or white vinegar, and then apply to a greasy surface such as the hob and the tiles around it. Leave for a few moments and then simply wipe the dirt away.
