Salt Of The Earth!

“SALT OF THE EARTH” – 13 NON TOXIC CLEANING SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR HOME:

salt666666

Salt is one of the most common, readily available and versatile minerals in the world today and according to the Salt Institute it can be utilised in over 14,000 different ways! Now that is a claim to fame !
Besides it’s exhaustible possibilities in the kitchen, salt (sodium chloride) has been used extensively since medieval times by ensuing generations to tackle numerous tasks around the home. Before the modern days of the easy fix from toxic chemical solutions, salt was used for cleaning, sanitising and beautifying.
There are a number of forms of salt, unrefined such as sea salt and himalayan salt, refined table salt, and iodised salt. The unrefined salts are the best for consuming but for cleaning purposes you can use any of the above.
Salt works as an effective yet gentle scouring agent and and can be used on its own or combined with other ingredients, such as vinegar, lemon, oil and baking soda to further boost it’s cleaning and deodorising properties. So lets get to work around the house and concentrate on just a few of the endless possibilities we have just using “Simply Salt”. Oh and maybe a little fresh lemon juice here and there!

1/ Cast Iron, Ceramic & Stainless Steel Pots & Pans

Salt acts as a mild abrasive without damaging the cooking surface. To remove difficult burnt-on food from pots and pans, add 3 to 4 tablespoons of salt immediately to the area and rub with a damp microfibre cloth. Then let it soak in a little hot water for 5 to 10 minutes before washing away with soapy water. Rinse and dry before rubbing with a light coating of oil, to stop food from sticking to your pots and pans as easily in the future.
Note: This method is not suitable for non-stick surfaces.

salt2/ Remove Spillage & Grease From Stove Tops & Ovens

Salt is particularly effective at absorbing grease and oil spills, so as soon as you spot your pans boiling over on the stove and casseroles bubbling over in the oven, carefully sprinkle the area with salt immediately; this will absorb the liquid and help to lift it from the surface. Leave the salt to work its magic and once the surface has fully cooled, scrape the dried mixture off with a spatula before wiping clean with a damp microfibre cloth, to remove any leftover salt and spillage.
Note: If you have a gas cooker, be careful to remove all of the salt as salt residues can cause your gas burners to flare up with a yellowish flame when you next ignite them.

3/ Remove Soap Scum & Grease From Kitchen Sinks

Place the plug in the sink and pour ½ cup of salt into the sink. With a clean, damp microfibre cloth, rub the salt around the inside and up the sides of the sink. Pour in a kettle of boiling water and scrub the sink with the salt solution using a long-handled brush. Unplug the sink and let the hot salty water run away. Repeat every two to three weeks to stop scum and grease from building up.

4/ Clean Sink drains

To prevent grease and unpleasant odours in sink drains, pour a handful of salt down the kitchen sink plug hole and flush with hot water. Do this weekly to keep drains clear and deodorised.

5/ Washing Up

Salt can be used in place of washing up liquid to wash the dishes. Simply sprinkle a handful of salt into hot water and wash as usual. Rinse the dishes well in warm water.

6/ Glassware

To remove stubborn stains such as red wine from your glassware, add a little salt to a damp microfibre cloth for extra abrasive power and rub gently in a circular motion. Although the salt is abrasive, it is gentle enough not to scratch the delicate glass.

7/ Clean & Brighten Wooden Chopping Boards

Just sprinkle wooden boards with a coarse salt such as sea salt and rub with a damp microfibre cloth, leave for 5 minutes then rinse with warm water. The salt will lift tough stains and odours.

8/ Drying Clothes In Wintersalt1

Use a handful of salt in the final laundry rinse to prevent clothes from freezing if you use an outdoor clothes line in the winter.

9/ Clean The Iron Base Plate

Sprinkle a little salt on a piece of paper and run the hot iron over it to remove rough, sticky spots, repeat as necessary.

10/ Clean & Freshen Artificial Flowers

To breathe life back into artificial flowers, place the flowers in a paper bag with ¼ to ½ cup of salt, depending on the size and quantity, and vigorously shake the bag. The salt will dislodge any accumulated dust, dirt and stale odours, leaving your flowers as good as new.

11/ Clean Refrigerators

Use a mixture of salt and soda water to wipe out and deodorise the inside of your refrigerator.

12/ Shine Copper & Brass

To restore the glisten to tarnished copper and brass, squeeze the juice from half a lemon or lime and fill the half with a teaspoon of salt. Rub the salted lemon or lime all over the brass/copper, leave for a minute, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and buff to a shine.

13/ Remove Water Marks & Rings

To make unsightly water marks caused by beverage glasses and hot dishes, disappear, mix 1 teaspoon of salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. With a soft microfibre cloth, gently rub the paste onto the ring or mark using a circular motion and wipe away any residue with a clean, damp cloth.
For ring marks on wooden surfaces or furniture, use olive oil with the salt instead of water.

Nonna’s Frittata

| Recipes

zucchini-frittataJUST LIKE NONNA USED TO MAKE!

I remember as a young girl visiting my family in Italy with my father and brother. Whilst the boys were out I would stand in the kitchen watching my grandmother make fritatta. Unlike many fritatta recipes you see today, my Nonna’s recipe was very simple, yet equally delicious and it soon became my favourite dish of hers. This frittata is not only quick it is tasty hot or cold. Leftovers can be packed up for lunches, snacks, picnics or breakfasts!

For a light healthy dinner option, simply serve hot from the pan with a tossed green salad on the side.

Serves 4-6

INGREDIENTS

4 tablespoons coconut oil, macadamia oil, avocado oil or olive oil
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
1 teaspoon fresh chopped thyme or 1⁄2 teaspoon dried thyme
2 large courgetttes (Zucchini’s)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
5-6 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt or sea salt
A good sprinkle of fresh ground black pepper
A good handful of grated Pecorino cheese or Parmesan

zucchhini

DIRECTIONS

Firstly fry the onion in half of the oil for about 5 minute

Cut the courgettes into small thin slices and add to the pan with the onion, cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes, until just tender.

Just before the courgettes are cooked, add the fresh thyme and the basil.

Place the mixture in a colander to cool and allow any excess water to drain out (about ten minutes).

In a bowl, beat the eggs lightly with a fork and fold in the salt, pepper, cheese and the drained cooled courgette and onion mixture.

Pour the remaining oil in a large frying pan or omelet pan and place over a medium heat.

When it is hot enough to make the eggs sizzle, pour in the egg mixture, making sure the courgette mixture is distributed evenly, then Immediately reduce the heat to low and cook the frittata gently until it is set, approximately 12-15 minutes.
Be careful not to overcook the eggs.

To finish cooking, slide the pan under the grill, six inches from the heat for 1-2 minutes until the top is golden brown.

Use a spatula to loosen the edges from the pan, slide the frittata out onto a serving plate.

Serve warm or cold, cut into wedges, with a sprinkle of fresh lemon juice. Enjoy!

BANANA BERRY BUZZ – SMOOTHIE BOWL

smoothie-bowl

Smoothie bowls are on trend at the moment, a slighty thicker version of the smoothie but they still possess the texture and taste of your usual morning beverage option. However with a smoothie bowl, in addition to blending in fruits and vegetables, you have the benefit of being able to add a variety of toppings, such as berries, nuts, seeds, or grains, making them even more nutritious and satisfying as a breakfast or lunch alternative.

Besides being especially pleasing to the eye, smoothie bowls are also delicious and exceptionally easy to create…Let your imagination run wild!

Ingredients

1 cup coconut, soy, almond or organic plain/greek yoghurt
¼ cup unsweetened almond, oat, soy or organic milk
1 small banana, frozen
½ fresh banana, sliced (to top the bowls)
½ cup strawberries, frozen
¼ cup fresh strawberries, sliced (to top the bowls)
½ cup blueberries, frozen
¼ cup fresh blueberries (to top the bowls)
⅓ cup frozen raspberries
2 tablespoons unsweetened shredded organic coconut
2 teaspoons chia seeds

Instructions

Combine the yoghurt, milk and frozen fruit in a blender until smooth. The blended mixture will be slightly thicker than a smoothie.
Pour into two breakfast bowls and top with the remaining sliced bananas, strawberries, blueberries, coconut and chia seeds.
The above recipe is one of my favourites but feel free to experiment and get creative, you can use any smoothie recipe or adapt them to whatever ingredients you have available. Simply remember to use less liquid or add a little more of something thickening (like an extra half of frozen banana or a few spoonfuls of oats) and blend as you normally would. Because the mixture is thicker, you may need to stop your blender and stir, or shake the ingredients, before blending again to get it smooth. So get buzzing and enjoy!

Lemon & Lavender Multi-Purpose Spray

LEMON & LAVENDER MULTI PURPOSE CLEANER

The cost of commercial, chemical-based cleaning products can be high, not only to the purse strings but to our long term health, our childrens wellbeing and the pollution of our enviroment.

According to a report by Allergy UK, every year the number of people suffering from allergies such as Asthma, Eczema and Rhinitis (Hayfever) increases by 5%, half of all affected being children.

Such allergies have trebled in the last 20 years.

Research has shown that persistent contact with numerous chemicals contained in commercial cleaners can aggravate these conditions and should be avoided wherever possible, therefore it makes perfect sense to begin reducing synthetic chemicals in our home environment at once.

Over the past few years I have transitioned into producing my own cleaning products for my home and my clients homes.
The solutions are efficient, safe, non-toxic and extremely cost effective.

This all rounder is a great recipe to get you started, I love this multi purpose cleaner with the combination of energising lemon and calming lavender, it smells simply delicious and can be used for cleaning kitchens, bathrooms and most hard surfaces.

Note: It is important to use glass bottles whenever possible as some oils, vinegars and citrus fruits can break down the plastic and cause it to leach chemicals into the cleaning spray. I recycle my own cleaning bottles from old vinegar and sauce bottles and just add a sterilised spray top.

Note: Lavender oil, although a natural product can be toxic to cats if ingested, so if you do have a cat in the house please be mindful when using this cleaner.
